History:
|
Ricardo Flores Magon was, along with Emiliano Zapata and Pancho Villa, one of the spiritual leaders, precursor, and great militant of the Mexican revolution of the beginning of the 20th century. He deeply marked one of the important currents of the anarchist movement: that of libertarian communism, otherwise known as anarchist-communism.
Faithful to his convictions, he was the first person to denounce the institutional turn of the Mexican revolution, never hesitating to use his journal “Regeneracion” to denounce the “caciques” of the day and their shadowy deals with oil and mining companies from the US. It through these actions that he has come today to represent a certain revolutionary ethic of honesty and comittment. A father of anti-imperialism, he was instrumental in a libertarian uprising in lower California in 1911. Arrested during the uprising, he was finally murdered in Leavensworth penitentiary the 22nd of November, 1922.
From this man, comes the name Brigada Flores Magon!
HISTORY
Brigada Flores Magon was born quite a few years ago as a result of the meeting of several individuals who came from the French alternative scene of the 1980s (in the case of the older ones) or from the scenes and movement that came after (in the case of the younger ones). Initially a group of anarchist militants, Brigada quickly became a regular at benefit concerts and partys in most places where it is possible to plug in an amplifier!
From the Parisian and French scene, passing by Chile, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Catalunya, or the Basque Country Brigada has racked up hundreds of concerts, often next to groups they admire such as Angelic Upstarts, Red London, Los Fastidios, Stage Bottles, Klasse Kriminale, Banda Bassotti, etc.). The band has always been composed of five musicians, and after several lineup changes, the current lineup is: Matteo and Julien (vocals and drums, respectively), Fred Alpi and Tristan on guitars, and Nico Patre on bass.
RELEASES
After a very popular split EP (with Catalan band, Opcio K 95) in 1998 on Mad Butcher Records (Germany), the first Brigada full length release came out in 2000 on Crash Disques (France). The album received unanimously good reviews and allowed the band to be exposed to an even larger public, the list of concerts being a good example of this.
One year later comes the released of 6 song EP “Anges Gardiens” released independently by the band in November 2001 and distributed by Tripsichord. Fuller and a more thorough work, it clearly marks the progression of the band in various senses. Without falling into simple propaganda, the album reflects the plitical and daily concerns of its musicians (anarcho-syndicalists, libertarian communists, anarchists, etc.).
In short, the kind of oi you want to hear!
In 2002 BFM had the opportunity to cross the ocean for a memorable tour in Canada, including two particularly memorable concerts in front of very enthiusiastic crowds in Quebec.
Once back in France, the “Brigadistas” began the preparation of their second full length, recorded at Kaiser Studio in Bourgogne by Lucas Trouble. “Rock or Die” marcs a true musical shift for teh band. A serious production worthy of the name and songs varying from raging street-punk to ska or reggae rock tunes showed that Brigada is a band that breaks formula and never stops pleasing.
Brigada is known and recongized around the European scene as a militant group, as well as one of the most committed antifascist bands around. Numerous are the tour organizers, labels, and concert organizers who don`t hesitate to trust Brigada Flores Magon for their important events. Distributed in Canada by Insurgence Records, by Proyecto Global in the Spanish State, in Italy by KOB records, Switzerland, and now in Germany through Fire and Flames, the groups is also developing it`s own projects in France through the organization of concerts (together with RASH and the CNT), and the musicians collective “Rock N Riot.”
With committed and non-compromising music, as well as a rigorous ethic, generosity, and sense of fun, Brigada Flores Magon has rapidly entered fully into the history of French streetpunk music!
